The iPhone 5S was officially released in September last year and has quickly worked its way up Apple’s best-seller list.
While the 5S is the most powerful smartphone Apple have released to date, a recent report from JDSU has found that the iPhone 5S uses almost 20% more data than the iPhone 5 and up to seven times more than the iPhone 3G.
It is no secret that new versions of smartphones use more data and battery life than their predecessor. They are more powerful and require more resources to run, so why is the iPhone 5S getting called out here?
While the JDSU article proves some valid points, is the iPhone 5S really to blame? or could it be related to features contained within iOS 7 and the data usage increase is just following trends of new technology?
Many iPhone 5 users have to manually upgrade to iOS 7 but the iPhone 5S comes with iOS 7 pre-installed.
After a quick search on Google, we found that iOS 7 has some hidden features that may be draining your data allowance and battery life without your knowledge.
Here are some features that use extensive amounts of data:
- Visiting a pre-opened tab in your browser gets automatically refreshed
- Background App Refresh allows content of applications to be refreshed while you are not currently on them draining your data and battery life in the process.
We suggest that you turn off this feature by following the below steps:
Settings > General > Background App RefreshIt could be your fault too – When 4G LTE was introduced in North America in 2010, smartphone users were excited to browse there favorite websites or applications at lightning fast speeds. Waiting for websites to load is a really frustrating feeling, especially if they do not load properly or you are in a hurry to see something.
Having a fast internet connection on your mobile device has been a necessity for many years now, but have you really considered the downside to it? A faster internet connection means that you load things more quickly, thus loading things more often. The faster you load websites, the more data you use. Being on a LTE network coupled with being on a iPhone 5S has potential risks to push you over your data allowance very quickly.
